About Me

I am an accredited counsellor and psychotherapist, registered with the BACP, BABCP, RCP, UKPTS and CMSUK, with experience delivering psychological therapies in NHS primary and secondary care services, the criminal justice system, and educational settings.

I am the founder and director of Mode Rehabilitation, a Stockport-based mental health charity specializing in working with young people, families and military veterans.

I am also the co-founder of Project RECCE working with military and ex-military personnel with complex trauma and PTSD.

My passion and enthusiasm for counselling and psychotherapy were born out of my own personal challenges, including first-hand experience of the highs and lows of the rehabilitation process and the rewards of overcoming personal struggles.

This experience gives me the advantage of being able to directly relate to the personal struggles of my clients, and to connect with them on a personal, as well as a clinical and professional level.

A Range of Therapies

I am trained in a range of different therapeutic approaches.

CBT

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) aims to help you identify, challenge and alter negative and destructive thinking patterns (cognitive distortions) and offers various techniques and exercises to help you recognize and address unhelpful behaviours that create and maintain psychological distress.

Counselling

Counselling is a form of talking therapy in which you are encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions in order to help you to better understand your feelings and emotions about whatever issues you’re struggling with, and to enable you to find your own solutions to your problems.

Method of Levels

Method of Levels is a revolutionary new form of talking therapy based on Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) which aims to help you shift your awareness to the conflicting thoughts and beliefs thought to be at the root of psychological distress in order to help you recognize and resolve the conflict.

Whatever the Issue

I specialise in a number of different issues and diagnoses.

Depression & Anxiety

Depression and Anxiety are among the most commonly diagnosed mental health issues in the UK, with around 23% of women and 17% of men aged 16 and over showing signs and symptoms each year, while 1 in every 10 women who give birth will experience postnatal depression within a year of doing so.

Despite these figures, only around 30% of people with a diagnosable mental health condition will seek help for their problems. Don’t suffer in silence!

Family Issues

When the relationships between family members begin to break down, the intervention of a therapist can offer a fresh perspective to help resolve conflict, rebuild trust and understanding, and give your relationships a new lease of life.

Family counselling can work to improve relationships of all kinds including romance and intimacy issues for couples, conflict between parents and children, sibling rivalry, and even issues between small groups of friends and work colleagues.

Substance Abuse

The road to recovery from substance abuse can go much more smoothly with a plan of action and somebody to hold you accountable.

With years of experience helping numerous clients to achieve sobriety, I can help you design a practical, feasible recovery plan, as well as help you to deal with any underlying issues that may be fuelling your addiction.

Trauma Counselling

For many people who have experienced trauma, feelings of shame and embarrassment relating to circumstances of the trauma can be as damaging as the event itself.

Not everybody wants to talk about what they’ve been through, however, for those people who do but would rather not share the details with family and friends, speaking to a therapist can be an incredibly empowering experience.

At Your Convenience

However you would like to access your therapy, I can offer an approach to suit your needs.

Office

Visit can me at two locations: a comfortable, professional, discrete location in Bredbury, Stockport, or at my new studio in tranquil surroundings near Daisy Nook, Oldham. Free parking available at both.

Home Visits

For people unable to travel, or who would simply prefer to receive therapy in the comfort of their own home, I am available for home visits throughout Stockport, South Manchester, Oldham and Tameside.

Skype/Telephone

For those people looking for a more affordable and easily accessible solution, I am also available for telephone or video appointments via Skype and Zoom.

Client feedback about my services

“Susan McCormack has helped me not only improve my mental and social state but also has helped me improve as a individual. Before her help I had a bad childhood which kept traumatising me and my severe anxiety and autism caused me to have a lack of friends and understanding of society. After her help I have managed to have strong friendships and be more happy in general. The discussions were a major influence over the 4 years we talked for and if it weren’t for her I may not even be around today or have become the man I am now and I’m extremely grateful for it, that is how successful her support was.”

“Sue, my counsellor has supported me and lifted me up when I’ve experienced hard times, especially through the lockdown. She has improved my life tremendously, through the sessions and advice given. I have found inner peace from talking to Sue and gained a path to discovering who I truly am. Thanks for the support!”

“You are the best counsellor ever. You have helped me in so many ways. You are amazing!”

“Feel really good still, not smoking the weed, which has reinforced the belief I don’t want it anymore, and it’s all down to Sue. Of course, I know it’s down to my efforts, but Sue has helped me to see things about myself that were previously unseen, Sue has just been there for me.”

“As a person who is currently in recovery from drug addiction, there have been the inevitable times when I have really needed that extra help making sense of some of the difficulties one encounters when negotiating both the sometimes choppy but often calm waters of life. Overall, I had 3-4 sessions with Sue, and words cannot convey the changes her approach made within that time. She did in those few sessions what other (also very competent therapists) could never quite reach. So, in my opinion, if you are looking for a gentle, non-invasive, non-judgmental therapist, working to a scientifically supported model, in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Look no further than Sue McCormack.”

“You have helped me in giving me opportunity, encouragement and to totally have faith in my God given abilities.”
